It is a mistake to respond without giving adequate thought to what others have said, and how to respond intelligently.
Thoughtless responses often lead to regret. This is particularly important when the subject is one that arouses emotion.
Any intense emotion can impair judgment, and one may later regret having responded emotionally rather than logically.
Finishing people's sentences and responding without thinking are symptoms of being time-driven and operating under
pressure.
We must be patient in developing patience. Restraining ourselves from interrupting others and pausing before
responding are ways in which we can begin to change. We can then take further steps in developing patience.
This can lead to a less tense lifestyle and may contribute to better health and longer life.
The Scripture relates that when Jericho fell, Joshua placed a curse on anyone who would rebuild it. Years
later, although he knew of the curse, Hiel the Bethelite undertook rebuilding Jericho. When he laid the foundation,
the oldest of his children died. As he continued building, his children died one by one, until his youngest child died
when the gates to the city were erected. (I Kings 16:34)
Hiel undertook his project with full awareness that he was defying Joshua's curse. It was obvious that his
children's death was not coincidental. How could he not realize that he was suffering the consequences of
his defiance? Only because he was so determined on defying Joshua that it blinded him to the reality of what
was happening.
A wise person will not be hasty to respond.
