Understanding
"Commit your ways to YHVH, trust also in Him... and do good."
Ps 37:5
"Trust in YHVH with all your heart, and lean not to your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall
direct your paths."
Prov 3:5-6
We may sometimes wonder why certain things happen in the world. Our perception may be that there are too many injustices.
We may ask, "Why does YHVH allow these things to happen?" Even Moses was bothered by this, and asked YHVH for an explanation.
YHVH told Moses that this was something that no human being, even Moses, could understand during his lifetime.
We must defer to the Divine wisdom. We believe that YHVH is absolute goodness. We can only say that with our limited knowledge
and wisdom, we are unable to fathom Divine wisdom. However, we can understand why we cannot understand.
A young child whose parents take away a sharp-edged toy cannot understand why they deprived him of it. He cannot understand
why a loving mother would allow the doctor to hurt him with a sharp needle. He may think that many things his parents do are
unfair, if not frankly cruel. As parents, we must do what we know to be best for the child's welfare. One day the child will
grow up and will understand. The gap between the human mind and Divine wisdom is far greater than that between a young child
and the parent.
Let us remember that YHVH's wisdom is supreme. We ask for understanding, but must realize that we can have only as much
wisdom as our mind can grasp.
