The first blessing in the Jewish wedding ceremony after the bride and groom have been joined in wedlock states that "YHVH
has created everything for His glory." That is a wonderful concept indeed, but what is its relevance to marriage?
Quite often, the love that brings two people together is essentially a selfish love. The young man sees in this young woman
someone who he feels can make him happy, and the woman sees him as someone who can give her happiness. Just a bit of reflection
reveals that each one is motivated by the pursuit of their own happiness. If, in the course of time, either or both
find that the other is not providing the happiness they sought, the foundation of the relationship is undermined.
YHVH wants the marriage to be based on a common goal: to establish a home and raise a family that will live according to
the teachings of the Torah - Bible -- and thereby bring greater glory to Him. Individual happiness is indeed important, but
is secondary to the prime purpose. Bringing glory to YHVH should be the couple's happiness. Any frustration in the relationship
can be weathered and overcome if the very foundation of the marriage is not weakened.
