Say You Are Sorry
"Your father commanded before he died saying: Thus shall you say to Joseph:
Please forgive the transgression of you brothers and their sin." (Gen 50:16-17)
The sale of Joseph was a terrible thing. Fortunately, the brothers' evil act ultimately benefited him. Through
a remarkable sequence of events, Joseph emerged as viceroy of Egypt. Indeed the brothers felt regret, but since Joseph
benefited from their iniquity, they thought an apology was unnecessary.
Jacob, however, instructed his children and future generations to ask forgiveness even though the
suffering later resulted in goodness and blessing.
