The literal translation of this verse is "Abraham, be he shall be, a great and powerful nation." The Torah teaches us an important principle: If you treat a person as he is, he will remain as he is. If you treat him as what he can become, then he will become that which he can become. A person's potential can be realized if it is appreciated and nurtured, otherwise it may remain dormant.
